An interdisciplinary research and development environment for responsible innovation

Research and development environment

RI-Valley is a research and development environment within the Marianne Institute, where academic research, technological innovation and societal responsibility converge.

Within RI-Valley, AI systems, digital architectures and emerging technologies are actively designed, developed and tested, with explicit attention to scale, use and impact from the earliest stages of development. Universities, companies and public institutions collaborate here on innovation that is both technically robust and socially sustainable.

RI-Valley operates across two complementary domains. In Péruwelz, the initiative is hosted on a historic castle estate of three hectares, with a 2,200 m² castle located in an old natural park. This site is dedicated to residential research, multi-day collaboration programmes, education and think tanks. In Keerbergen, RI-Valley is anchored on a one-hectare wooded domain, designed for focused research, smaller development teams and in-depth technical work.

Together, these two locations function as a real-time living laboratory, where research projects, prototypes and collaborative models can be developed, observed and refined in continuous interaction. This setup enables a wide range of projects, from fundamental academic research and experimental AI applications to societal pilots and policy-oriented explorations.

RI-Valley operates within the framework of Octology, a practical and interdisciplinary approach that examines how technology, human behaviour and collective dynamics interact as systems grow and scale. Octology supports researchers, developers and decision-makers in creating technologies that not only perform, but remain viable and trustworthy over time.

For universities, public authorities and companies seeking to develop technology with ambition, confidence and responsibility, RI-Valley offers a unique environment for collaboration and long-term innovation.
